The American Board of Audiology™ (ABA), an autonomous organization, is dedicated to enhancing audiologic services to the public by promulgating universally recognized standards in professional practice. The ABA encourages audiologists to exceed these prescribed standards, thereby promoting a high level of professional development and ethical practice.
Pilot Program for Tier 1 Continuing Education from JAAA!In an effort to facilitate greater opportunity for high quality continuing education as required by the ABA for recertification, the ABA is implementing a pilot program recognizing the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Academy of Audiology (JAAA).
In response to requests from the audiology community, the ABA is piloting the concept of recognizing peer-reviewed journals for Tier 1 continuing education. Given that a peer-reviewed journal by definition includes a more rigorous process, the assessments completed may focus on a variety of subject matter areas and not simply one subject matter area as required for presentations.
The ABA will pilot this concept with JAAA for one year and then evaluate the efficacy of the program. The program commences with Volume 19 of JAAA.
In order to earn Tier 1 credits, an ABA certificant must participate in the Academy's CE Registry, earn 80% or better on the assessment and must complete a minimum of 3 assessments in each three-year certification period.

The ABA Is Pleased to Announce the Inaugural Class of Board Certified Audiologists with a Specialty in Cochlear ImplantsThe following audiologists have distinguished themselves by meeting all the requirements for Board Certification in Audiology, as well as meeting rigorous specialty requirements with respect to Cochlear Implants (CIs) including direct patient contact and case management hours as well as passing an objective written examination developed collaboratively by subject matter experts and an educational testing and psychometric firm. The ABA congratulates this dedicated group of audiologists who have demonstrated, and have pledged to continuously enhance, their knowledge in this specialty area.
Phonak Generously Supports the ABA's Pediatric Audiology Specialty Certification (PASC)Cathy Jones, President and CEO of Phonak Hearing Systems, Inc., announced that Phonak will make a gift in the amount of $50,000 to the American Academy of Audiology Foundation to support the American Board of Audiology’s Pediatric Audiology Specialty Certification (PASC) initiative. “We are pleased to partner with the Foundation and the ABA to ensure that all children receive adequate care for the assessment and treatment of their hearing loss from knowledgeable practitioners,” said Cathy Jones. ABA Receives Extraordinary Number of New ApplicationsUpdate on ABA Applications
The ABA has reviewed all applications received through January 31, 2007. Many of these applications have gone before, or are soon to go before, the ABA Board. The ABA office has also contacted many applicants, apprising them of additional information needed, and is continuing this process and processing more recently received applications, including the numerous applications received at AudiologyNOW! The ABA is in the process of contacting each new applicant acknowledging receipt of applications and advising each applicant of the approximate time that his or her application will go before the ABA Board of Governors.
